Texas Hold ‘Em is the most popular form of poker played in the world. It is believed to have started in Robstown, Texas. Omaha is one of the most popular forms. But no one believes the game started in Omaha, Nebraska, a city more famous for college baseball’s World Series.

In fact, Omaha is one of the newer forms of poker. It was not introduced to Vegas casinos until the early 1980s, although versions of the game might have existed in home games.

Its similarity to Hold ‘Em has made it a popular casino and tournament game, but it has not surpassed Hold ‘Em in popularity.

There are many versions of the game, including Hi-Lo and 8 or better, but Omaha Hi remains the simplest and most popular form of the game.

Here is how it works:

Players are dealt four cards each face down. From there, the game is played exactly like hold ‘em, with three community cards dealt (the flop) followed by a round of betting. Then another community card (turn) and another round of betting. Finally, a last card is dealt (river) followed by another round of betting and a showdown.

In Hold ‘Em, players use their two hole cards in any combination with the five board cards to make the best possible hand. In Omaha, however, players must use two cards from their hand in combination with three of the community cards to make the best five-card hand.

The name probably came from a form of Hold ‘Em that had developed early, where players had to use their two cards combined with three of the cards to make the best five card hand. That was called Omaha to differentiate it from true Texas Hold ‘Em. The name carried over to the four card version that exists today.

Once Omaha started showing up in casinos, it became a popular tournament and side game. In fact, it is probably the second most popular form of poker played today.

It is also possible Omaha hi emerged from several other times of games that could have been part of its development. They all had different names, however, so it is hard to gauge their influence. One game dealt as many as five cards to the player, but that limited a table to only eight players. Casino tables often seat nine or 10, so this did go over well in Las Vegas. Hence the four-card version’s popularity.

Once the four card version was born, it was instantly popular with pros, and the offshoots developed. Now there are many events in the World Series of Poker dedicated to Omaha Hi. Some of the best players in the world have mastered it and it is a key element of The Big Game, which is played in Las Vegas’ Bellagio Casino.

It is also now the second-most popular form of online poker and is played by millions of players around the world – even in Omaha.

When it first developed, many people thought it would be the future of poker, but Omaha has not surpassed Hold ‘Em and likely won’t. Still, Omaha Hi is a very popular game and its future is assured.

And while no one is quite sure where it first developed, but one this is relatively certain – it wasn’t in Omaha. But now it is all over the world.
